The engine cylinder block casting is the core load-bearing component of an engine, the so-called heart of the power unit, cast from high-strength gray cast iron or aluminum alloy. Gray iron versions offer wear and high-temperature resistance, while aluminum blocks deliver weight savings. Internally the block integrates cylinder bores, crankcase, water jackets and oil galleries; cylinder bores are honed to match piston rings and reduce blow-by, and the jackets and galleries supply cooling and lubrication. Precise bolting to cylinder head and oil pan forms a closed working space that withstands high temperature, pressure and vibration during operation.
